New milestone for ATM Group in Denmark: opening of the M4 metro line extension in Copenhagen

opening of the M4 metro line extension in Copenhagen

On June 22, 2024, ATM Group celebrated a significant achievement with the official opening of the Copenhagen M4 metro line extension to Sydhavn and Valby, that aims to enhance city connectivity, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel quickly around the city.

Since 2008 ATM Group, through Metro Service A/S, is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the entire Copenhagen automated metro network which operates around the clock.

The network serves all strategic points of the city, such as Copenhagen Airport, Central Railway Station, Parken Stadium, and the University. It includes four lines that are well integrated with the urban and suburban S-train systems, to which a new light rail line will be added from 2025.

The inauguration of the M4 extension was attended by His Majesty the King Frederik X, along with top Danish and international government authorities, from the Danish Minister of Transport, Thomas Danielsen, to the Mayor of Copenhagen, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, the Italian Ambassador to Denmark, Stefania Rosini, and the Greek Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Nikolaos Tachiaos. ATM Group has been represented by the CEO Arrigo Giana, and Metro Service CEO Claudio Cassarino.

The M4 extension includes five new metro stations, expanding Copenhagen's metro network to a total of 44 stations and 43 kilometers of track. By 2030, the new 5 stations are expected to accommodate around eight million passengers annually. Overall, it is expected that more than 135 million passengers will travel by metro in Copenhagen in 2024.

ATM has been running automated metro systems for over 10 years and currently manages 6 automated lines in Milan and Copenhagen. Thanks to this experience, in October 2023 the Group signed the contract for the operations and maintenance of the first automated metro of Greece, in the city of Thessaloniki. The new metro will serve the second most populous city of Greece, with more than one million inhabitants, and it will be in service within the end 2024.

This major accomplishment confirms the role of ATM Group as one of the leading international players in the management of automated metros.
